…Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and prostrated himself before him, crying out in a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” … -Mk 5:1-20
God is good, all the time.
Friends, did you ever read one of the extraordinary actions of Jesus towards people and wished that such actions were common in our days as well? Here we are, with a passage showing Jesus' supreme power to suppress and eradicate the forces of evil and hopelessness that deny some people of their God-given life of faith, hope, love, joy, happiness, courage, and peace.
Today's passage about the possessed and afflicted man by a legion of forces besieging and casting a dark shadow over his life has a larger context; it expresses the heavyweight of sin and despair that humanity experienced following the fall of man. The good news is that Jesus' obedience to the Father, however, gives him dominion over all evil forces to crush them and set humanity free again.
Jesus’s power to restore and crush the evils of this world is still actively present in the Church and her sacraments, prayer, and the holy word of God. Saint John tells us that "all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (Jn 1:12).
We all can come under the heavy load of sin or be burdened with disease, worries, depression, and hopelessness. But we can regain our hope, joy, peace, and happiness if we catch sight of Jesus and run to him with our sharp eye of faith. Jesus can save us; he will do all things new for us.
