"Who is my mother? Who are my brothers? “And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
is my brother, and sister, and mother."-Matt 12:48-50
Friends,
God is good all the time!
We live in a populated world, yet there is so much loneliness around us. I remember celebrating the funeral Mass of a mother whose only child was a disabled daughter. For some reason I do not know, the only person who accompanied the woman as she made her final passage in the world was her disabled daughter. Initially I kept questioning and wondering how much loneliness they might have endured together. With my Ghanaian socially structural mentality, I wondered if there were no other extended family or friends and neighbors of the mother or her daughter. That is how lonely the world can be; there are many such situations all around us. For some people, it is someone to talk to, or listen to them, give them bread, get them medicine.
But then soon I saw a profound reason for hope. The two young altar servers serving the Mass came to me to ask if they could sit with the daughter in the pews instead of sitting at their usual place in the sanctuary? And that is what they did. Beyond the smart act of the young altar servers, the daughter has a certain hope that the church would be there to support her.
When Jesus stood before the crowd and pointed to the disciples and said, "Here are my mother and brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother"(Matt 12:49-50); He was redefining and expanding the meaning of love. In this way, love has been perfected among us so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment, for, in this world, we are just like Him” (1 Jn 4:16b-17). The love of Christ is a solution to loneliness. Imagine all Christians giving the love we have received from God beyond limits to every other person. We would transform the world.
Let us take the loneliness in people’s heart away by caring and looking for the neighbor, the friend, the family member, and even the stranger. Why do not you start to or continue to get in touch with the people that you think about or see but only from a distance. And if you are wondering about what someone you are trying to approach will say to you then take courage in these words, "There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love” (1Jn 4:18).
Prayer blessings: Lord, in Your light, we see light; in Your love we see love. Help us to radiate what You have given us to others.
