Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. (Jn 15:26)
God is good, all the time!
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples on the day of Pentecost fulfilled the promise Jesus made to the apostles that he would ask the father to send another gift of his love to them and became the start of a new way God would unite himself with the souls of believers— God has made the Holy Spirit the sweet guest of our souls.
When Jesus said to the disciples, “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify because you have been with me from the beginning,” he wanted them to prepare and welcome him as the guest of their souls.
God continuously pours out the Holy Spirit abundantly into our hearts to infuse it with our souls. As David acknowledged: “When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.” The Holy Spirit is, indeed, a sweet guest of our souls and light for our steps. He enlightens our hearts and fills us with wisdom, intelligence, courage, strength, and help for all manner of Christian actions.
To paraphrase the words of Pope Francis about the word of God, I will say that the Holy Spirit is not given to us as a kind of mirror in which we see the reflection of our miseries and inconsistencies. This holy gift is given to transform, renew, and not to judge and condemn, but to offer us healing and forgiveness. Anticipate the fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit again this Pentecost and pray for it. Come, Holy Spirit, sweet guest of my soul!
