Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament administered by a priest to a baptized person who begins to be in danger of death because of illness or old age. It consists of prayer and the anointing of the body with the oil of the sick. The proper effects of the sacrament include a special grace of healing and comfort to the Christian who is suffering the infirmities of serious illness or old age, and includes the forgiving of the person’s sin.

The sacrament of the anointing of the sick is celebrated communally at St. John’s at one of the Sunday Eucharists in the fall of each year.  The sacramental priest is available to schedule the celebration of this sacrament as needed by the faithful. The sacrament is usually celebrated at times of extreme illness, advanced age, or due to a debilitating physical, mental, or emotional situation.
